Gates acknowledges that the speed at which AI is developing is truly frightening, and that people will likely see their jobs replaced very soon

Artificial intelligence is occupying more and more sectors of society, and many people are seeing their professional future begin to shake. Everything is moving forward and now wherever we look we see artificial intelligence.

In this highly technological context, where everything is moving so fast, Bill Gates poured oil on the fire instead of trying to extinguish it, with a prediction that left no one indifferent: In less than ten years, human tasks will be practically non-existent – everything will be replaced by artificial intelligence.

This is what the tycoon said on his Jimmy Fallon show and later in a speech at Harvard. It sounds like fiction, but every day we get closer to starring in a scene from I, Robot.

What is Gates’ dream?

Easy: For him, AI is not just a tool to help us with university assignments, but the next big leap in the digital revolution (a revolution he helped start).

If his previous goal was to place a computer in every home, today he dreams (and also warns) of a world where intelligence will be free, ubiquitous and able to replace anyone, including the smartest minds in fields such as medicine or education.

However, with great power comes great responsibility, as the saying goes, and Gates himself recognizes that the speed at which artificial intelligence is developing is truly frightening, and that humans will likely see their jobs replaced very soon.

Education and medicine, the first sectors to be transformed

If we talk about the education sector, changes are already on the horizon, just as Elon Musk predicts, as teachers could be replaced by systems capable of teaching, motivating and correcting students in real time.

The future of education looks scary, we are no longer just talking about digital whiteboards, but about an algorithmic pedagogy that could wipe out teachers.

On the other hand, another area where AI could really shake things up is medicine, where Gates sees a more immediate and revolutionary impact.

Gates believes that artificial intelligence will outperform doctors in complex diagnoses, analyzing genetic data, symptoms, clinical databases, and scientific publications at speeds impossible for the human brain to grasp.

This, instead of creating tension or eliminating jobs, would allow every person to receive high-quality healthcare.

Likewise, it reminds us that there are broken healthcare systems and areas where people cannot even access a doctor. Therefore, with this change, healthcare will no longer depend on your location on the map. That sounds better, right?

Progress or threat?

It is clear that Bill Gates is not a fool and is fully aware of the dangers we face with the use of artificial intelligence.

And in the same way that it insists that AI can be democratized and become a widely used and public tool, it also knows that it can amplify inequality, polarize society, or fuel disinformation, just as it happened with social media like X, which today is heavily characterized by disinformation and political polarization.

And this is where personal values come in. Because the problem is not having technology, but how we use it.

For his part, Mustafa Suleiman, Microsoft’s chief artificial intelligence officer and author of The Coming Wave, is adamant: He doesn’t believe that AI will just be a useful tool, he believes that AI will immediately replace jobs and that the process will be quite difficult, as AI is leading us to a world where many hands are no longer needed.

Thus, discussions on things like global basic income or structural inequalities will likely be reopened.

The future is not predetermined and we cannot predict it, but it is clear that AI is here to stay. And whether it will be good or dangerous will depend mainly on who guides it. Will we learn to live with her?
